SAVE OUR FEMALE STUDENTS AGAINST THE INCESSANT RAPE ATTEMPTS

The MSSNOAU condemns in its entirety the criminal acts being perpetrated by some unscrupulous fellows who have chosen the female hostels as their perpetual crime scenes for perpetrating their sexual harassment and rape within the last few days. This is against the Shariah, the law of our land (Nigeria) as well as against the policies in place within this university.

We all believed that OAU Campus to be a safe and sane environment to stay but these incidents have openly challenged the safety and proved us wrong. In fact, the National Assembly which has recently been advocating the need for female students to be made to stay on campus in order to guarantee their safety will be in utter dismay to know their safety cannot be guaranteed even on campus. Where then should we take them to if not ensuring that these criminal atrocities are nibbed by the bud?

It is no more news that this act has been so recurring in Moremi Hostel which is an abode for female students over the past few days, we hereby urge all female students to always stay alert and vigilant in all situations especially at night by ensuring that they do not stay or sleep alone and avoid unnecessary movement at night. We also call on the University Management, the Security Unit of the University, the Muslim Community, the Students’ Union, and all other bodies of authority to come to our rescue as our sisters have been living in fear of being raped by these unremorseful perpetrators.
